Block Island is located only 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island.    13 miles (21 km) south from mainland Rhode Island, from which it is separated by Block Island Sound.  The island is part of the Outer Lands region, a coastal archipelago, with magnificent harbors and white sandy beaches.

It is known for its bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. It also hosts two historic lighthouses: Block Island North Light on the northern tip of the island, and Block Island Southeast Light on the southeastern side. Much of the northwestern tip of the island is an undeveloped natural area.
